The Blue Marble

This snapshot taken by astronauts on December 7, 1972 is one of the most widely distributed photographic images in existence. The image is one of the few to show a fully lit Earth, as the astronauts had the Sun behind them when they took the image. I remember these exciting times as America raced to the moon.

On a warm day in July, when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon’s surface, I just couldn’t believe it! Men landing at the Sea of Tranquility! As I watched this event before my eyes on a tiny black and white TV I was breathless. I was so very proud of these three brave men flying the distance from earth to moon in the airless cold outer space and then they returned back home afterwards.
